Missing from History: The Muslim Women Leaders Who Fought for India’s Freedom

Research and Script by Nayla Khan

India’s freedom struggle is a story of triumph that has been tirelessly written about. Many who fought for India’s independence became enshrined as stalwart figures - Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and so on. But as history was drawn down to books, many other names were left out and little to nothing was written about them. Asghari Begum, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Bibi Amtus Salam, Anees Kidwai and Abadi Bano Begum are but a few names of Muslim women leaders who fought for India’s independence. These women united their regions in rebellions, tested the might of the British Empire and sacrificed land and life for freedom.
